MapMyRide Cadence & Power Bug

This is an FYI to anyone using ANT+ sensors with MapMyRide.

If you have a cadence sensor and you use a power meter, you must initialize the sensors in the order of:

  1. Cadence / Cadence & Speed Sensor
  2. Power Meter

Power meters provide cadence, so if you have both you wind up with two different devices outputting the same metrics. However, MapMyRide doesn’t properly handle sensor precedence. If you use a Joule GPS or a Garmin Edge, and you have both sensors paired, those computers will give priority to the dedicated cadence sensor. However, MapMyRide will prioritize whichever device was enabled first. If you do enable power first, you’ll find that your ride data will be completely corrupted.

MapMyRide will know you used sensors and show you maximum heart rate, power in watts, etc., but it will not show you the breakdown of your ride, your HR or Power Zones, your splits, etc. Furthermore, the raw JSON data will not load (instead it will just look like status: FAILED, and you’ll be unable to export your data using my export tool.

Since I’ve permanently lost data due to this bug, I’ve moved away from MMR and onto a dedicated cycling computer.
